HAMMOND: A sound of its ownOne of the most identifiable sounds in modern music is that of the authentic tonewheel organs manufactured by the Hammond Organ Company from 1935 to 1975. For decades, the most notable model was the B-3 due to its features and its distinctive case; however, the classic sound is found in most Hammond tonewheel organs from the 30s through the early 70s.
What makes the sound of these organs so unique is how they produce the sound: using a synchronous motor to spin "tonewheels" at a consistent speed. Pickups take the pitch from each wheel and the sound is then amplified using genuine tube amplifiers. These organs are often matched with Leslie Speakers for the optimal "Hammond Sound."
